Hi all. Just wanted to alert you all to this petition opportunity. The Louisiana legislature has passed a bill mandating the teaching of "Intelligent Design" in public schools. The governor has not signaled that he will veto it, and may simply let the law go into effect without his signature, to avoid making a decision either way.
We have the opportunity to add many voices to the clamorcalling for himto veto this bill. As the petition says, this law has national ramifications--every other legislature faced with this or similar bills has rejected it so far, except in Michigan where a bill like it has been stopped in committee at this point.
If you would rather not give aid and comfort to the ID forces in your state, I recommend signing on to this petition in hopes that we can stop Louisiana from cracking the dam that currently holds back the anti-science sentiments that simmer in this country.
In a comment on my page, Arno asked if I thought it would help if he signed this petition, since he doesn't live in the US.
My answer: you BET I think it would help if you signed. I'm pretty sure that the governor of Louisiana knows where Germany is (no guarantee, given the educational system down there ;-) and I think it would carry some weight with him to hear that his state will get "bad press" even outside the US if he fails to veto this execrable law!
Arno, have you seen any efforts regarding the teaching of "Intelligent Design" in Europe?
