Hi Bruce, Good to hear from you and delighted you are busy on that bio. I got a strong impression that Korzybski had strong socialist leanings and I seem to remember some comments he had about business that had a sharp edge to them. On 2 March ...

Curious that on this date my mind turns to Korzybski. It was on this date 59 years ago that his life ended. For some reason I get around to remembering it every year.

I don’t hear much on this site and to be honest I’ve been busy too. When I retired I realized that I could answer the question: “What would you do if you could do anything you wanted to?” For the past year I’ve been thinking about an economy going pretty much where AK said it would: out of its mind. For some time before that I’ve… Continue

My, you sound busy. The Hayakawa award didn't exactly 'float my boat' either. But don't be shy about sending an article to the Institute. When I was in New York, I met the new editor of ETC., Bill Petkanas, seems like a real solid guy and knows G.S. quite well. I was also delighted to meet Lance Strate, the new Executive Director of the Institute, with whom I've been in contact for some time. The guy is a solid communications and media ecology scholar, knows G.S. quite well, and has already shown himself to be a real asset to the forward movement of the Institute of General Semantics. I don't think either one of those gentlemen will object to some healthy controversy. You're a damned good writer. Go for it!

As for the biography, I'm working on the last several chapters now covering the final decade of Korzybski's life, when he founded the Institute. Still a great deal of work to do but I'm getting to the end of it. I just finished writing about Chase and The Tyranny of Words, which came out in January 1938. I decided to give a minimum amount of space to C and his book because ultimately Chase seems to me rather a 'lightweight' in the formulating department as far as Korzybskian G.S. goes. So a more extensive critique on your part seems worthwhile.

David,
Lucky you. And you knew AK as well?

I didn't know Bontrager. I've lived in State College four years. I do know that Elton Carter taught here years ago.

I’ve read all of Fuller’s books and have all but one or two but never got the chance to meet him. If I was going to write another book like the one I recently finished on Korzybski it would probably be on Fuller. I find him a complex man who, like Eric Hoffer, and a long list of other notables, wrapped himself in a legend and that image puzzles me. Any comments? I’ve also got four copies of his map in Life—find them in antique stores. Unfortunately, or fortunately, I’ve got a considerable list of writing projects and the local economy group I’ve been nurturing into life here seems to have reached critical mass.

Thanks for the photos.

Esalen has been (mostly) evacuated and seminars cancelled. They seem to be confident and are showing a competent looking group of local firefighters.

Did you know Ora Ray Bontrager? If I'm not mistaken he taught at State College, PA.

As I remember Esalen was on Highway 1, heading from Limekiln to Big Sur, We used to camp at Limekiln and eat at the restaurant overlooking the cliffs, just north of the camp grounds. The beach at Big Sur was very nice for swimming. We haven't been there in twenty years.

Fire has nearly gotten Esalen at time or two. They've grown a lot of trees on the property and that increases the hazard.

I have an article about Esalen and Integral Transformative Practices now approved by George Leonard but not yet Michael Murphy. It tells something of my love of that place and country. I was born in Monterey, which might have something to do with my attachment to the country. Hayakawa lead seminars at Esalen, lead snake dances on the lawn and enjoyed the hot baths. A major theme of my article is to reinforce the link between general semantics and the human potential movement.

Note to group: Did you know that John C. Wright has just published a new book continuing van Vogt's null-a plot. Lots of general semantics and I like it the way it is written.

Hi Bill"

Putting Emerson on your special interests list makes us kindred souls. "Friends" in the ning vernacular. Also I live just a few miles above Esalen. All that beautiful Big Sur area is on fire and evacuated right now. So so sad. I imagine Esalen is fairly safe being on the ocean side of the highway. But with no breathable air at the moment. It's devastating.

It's Bach Festival time in Carmel.
