Hello, The halls ring slightly with the ghosts that still remain. Is anyone still here? I heard from Steve Stockdale. He is reviving this old house in a very beautiful way that I admire greatly. He has made a presentation of GS for us to to read (...

Holtzman - On Vision and Art

I remember very well the influence Harry Holtzman had on changing my fundamental “visual habits” of perception (GS, summer seminars, Millbrook, 1948, and Great Barrington, 1949). He would draw a simple “straight line” with charcoal on a blank white piece of artist’s sketching paper, and then asked us to describe what we saw.

Time-Binding Bound Too Tightly

Time-Binding Bound Too Tightly

by David (Levine) Linwood

I received the following piece from a former colleague, Professor Karla Foss, indicating when the “Bindings” might be a little too tight.

Why was that gauge used? Because that’s the way they buil… Continue

David,
Sorry about the time that slipped by since your letter and my initial wish to respond. We went to Alaska to visit our son and his greater family, then I came back with a two-doctor "plane disease" that has kept me down. Finally, tonight, when I tried to answer you, I was informed I couldn't answer directly but had to go thru thisisnot that, which I had forgotted the password for, etc. But here I am. Please send me your ordinary e-mail address, just in case. Also, if I check "send a Message," will it be seen by everyone on my small friends list, or only by you?

Ok, we have the famous Daffodil. Charlotte is on the periphery just out of camera range

Hi Bruce,

As to the cat, "Daffodil" -- it may very well be. I know my wife, Marjorie (Washburn) Levine was petting Daffodil in 8/53 -- our first visit back to Kendig after I returned from Korean War Service.
Looks like the man with cat (not a cat in a hat!)

has Daffodil also.

Your detailed description answers my question nicely and certainly qualifies as what I would call "debriefing," which I had understood him to do.

David, a question about Korzybski's presentations at the seminars where you worked with him.

I know that he had his assistant taking notes so he (the assistant) could give AK a 'flap' if he got 'lost' in his presentation after an extended 'footnote'.

Did Korzybski also have debriefing after a lecture where the assistant or others would comment on what he covered and how it went? I seem to recall reading or hearing this somewhere but can't recall where now. Or perhaps I'm hallucinating it. 8-)

Anyhow, what were your duties and what did you do at the seminars where you assisted Korzybski. Did you do anything that resembled such a debriefing on his lectures?

Dear GS People,

An historical note. Ms. Maxine Mallach who just last year received the J. Talbott Winchell Award for her lifetime contributions in support of the Institute of General Semantics, has passed away at her home in Lime Rock, Connecticut. Her house is in easy walking distance to the Institute of General Semantics when the Institute was located in Lime Rock in the old Leonard Richardson mansion.

Maxine served faithfully from 1946 to 1973, first hired as a typist and assistant editor to the Director, Ms M. Kendig. In later years, after Charlotte Read had moved to the Columbia University area with her husband Alan Walker Read, and M. Kendig was feeling the onset of ill health and advancing old age, Maxine took on the role of Acting Director, with the aid of a few associates. She kept the General Semantics Bulletin and the Newsletter in publication, and served the Membership.

Maxine relates how Alfred Korzybski used to come visit with her father, Joseph Mallach, who was an aeronautical engineer and mathematician, and hold long conversations with him. "Mac" developed a great affection and admiration for Korzybski and was devoted to the promotion of the goals of the Institute, especially the GS education of k-12 aged children.

She died in her sleep, July 29, 2008, at the age of 86, after a short illness. A dozen people were present at the funeral celebration, including IGS member Bob Potter, who also received the J. Talbot Winchell Award, and a surviving nephew of Maxine, and household caretakers, were present at the funeral, held in Canaan, CT. Although Maxine was not religious -- in the absence of a Catholic priest, services were performed by a local "Eucharistic" Minister. Bob Potter relates that the weather was "absolutely perfect." He apologized for the GS-forbidden words -- but insisted the description was less than adequate.

Bob invites anyone interested in visiting Maxine's gravesite (as well as that of Korzybski, Kendig, and Gates) to contact him. He lives nearby in West Cornwall, CT, telephone
860-672-6191 or write to address: 337 Town Street, West Cornwall, CT 06796.

Sincerely,

David Linwood

PS. A thank you to Janet Manko, Editor of the Lakeville Journal, and close neighbor of Maxine, for her obituary and help with the final arrangements.

Also a big thank you to Bob Potter for his help. DL

I am not familiar with the name Pula...
I read Science and Sanity, Language in Thought and Action, and People in Quandaries...about 25 years ago. Currently, I have a little group of folks (9) that meets twice a month and we are reading Selections from Science and Sanity and Bruce's book, Drive Yourself Sane. It's been delightful to revisit GS with my little group and to realise how much 'stuck' with me from my earlier 'visit' to the GS alternate reality.
thank you for befriending me...the Kathleen of 7-7-08
