Oh, something I just remembered, my friend the late Homer J. Moore, Jr. once attended a lecture given by Fuller. Afterwards, he went up and got Fuller to sign his autograph in a copy of Science and Sanity that Homer happened to have with him. Homer later loaned the book to someone who never returned it. That pissed Homer off quite a bit. I wish I knew what Fuller wrote or said to him.

There's a lot to say about Fuller and AK.

Korzybski met Fuller probably in Chicago, perhaps in the 1920s according to Harold Drake who interviewed Fuller about this. (I'm pulling this out of memory and have to track down the exact sources.)

Fuller worked on the Institute of General Semantics Seminar-Workshop staff in the 1950s for one or two or more years. The Institute has photos of Fuller lecturing with various models and devices he liked to use.

Kenneth G. Johnson, on the Institute teaching staff for many years, told me he attended one of Fuller's seminar-workshop lectures where Fuller had talked for several hours. Whatever his previous vow of silence, the man could talk and talk for hours. After one such marathon, he picked up one of his illustrative devices—a roll of toilet paper—paused for a moment, looked up at the group sheepishly and suggested that they take a break.

I think of Fuller and Korzybski as two great ships that passed near each other, recognized the other's significance more or less and then continued on their own separate paths. Fuller, out to design a world and seeking to understand the structure of the world. Korzybski, out to help humans behave more sanely, and seeking to understand the nature of man and the structure of understanding. Two different but complementary tasks.

I graduated last year from UC Santa Cruz and wrote my senior thesis on the life and impact of Buckminster Fuller. I noticed he'd been influenced by Science and Sanity and gave a speech for one of the IGS annual conferences (or something like that?) I wish I could find a transcript of what he said. I know Fuller took a "two year moratorium on speech", essentially to unlearn bad habits in his language and perception. This seems like it might have been inspired by GS. Does anyone know more about Fuller's connection to Korzybski's work?

Hi James,
Nice to see you joined this group of 'miscreants' and 'ne'er-do-wells'. Not much activity here lately-possibly due to vacation times. We've got a lot of knowedgable people here and I'm sure you have a lot to contribute too. Maybe you can say more about your studies...hmmm?
