One of those "several ways" might make things easier for you. Do you know about RSS? You might have noticed little orange squares scattered around the site, with the label RSS. This is a messaging service that you can subscribe to. If you do so, Ning will send you an alert (known as an RSS "feed") every time the related page changes. There's a sort of "global" RSS widget on the Main page, right above the photos. If you subscribe to that one, you will get an alert whenever any page in the ThisIsNotThat network changes.
However, the "alert" is not an email. The assumption is that you have an RSS reader, which is a separate application that runs on your computer, alongside your browser and your email. You have to run it and go look at it now and then to see the alerts.
Remember though, about several ways to do the same thing. There are services that will receive your RSS feeds for you and send them to you in an email. I use RSSFwd. You don't have to subscribe to RSSFwd, but you do have to download a browser plugin. Once you have that, you just go to the page you want to watch, click on the RSS feed icon, then click on the special bookmark that the plugin installed. Finally, you enter your email address and select whether you want each alert as a separate email or all the alerts for a given day combined into a single "digest" email which contains links to each of the changes for that day. You can choose which to changes view by clicking on a particular link.
This is Web 2.0--you build a strong community if you can pay attention to what's happening.

Reading things on the web can sometimes make me feel as if I were in a maze. The way we present things (ore we find things) counts as much as what is actually presented isn't it?

Second, here's how I understand this to work: the comment stays where you make it. If you comment on a photo, the comment appears there. If you comment on someone's blog entry, the comment stays there. The confusing one is commenting "to" a person by commenting on their profile. Person 1 makes a comment on the profile of Person 2--that will appear on the profile of Person 2. Person 2 might then go to Person 1's profile to respond. That comment in turn stays on Person 1's profile, not attached to the first comment.
I think the better approach involves something people might find odd at first--commenting on their own profile. In this case, Person 1 goes to Person 2's profile and leaves a comment. Person 2 can simply add their own comment right after the one from Person 1, and the comments stay together.
Alternatively, you could have a) started a conversation (using the Forum tab at the top of any page), which allows anyone to add a comment that stays with the conversation; or b) you could have created a blog entry (using the My Blog link on your My Page) which Steve could have replied to by commenting on it; or c) you could have sent Steve an email (using the Send a Message link under his picture above) to which he could reply, although that only goes to him and the reply only goes to you.
That's what I've figured out so far.....
I feel puzzled about the way we (in general) exchange here. When John receives a message from Paul on John's comment wall, does it give a more legible result to send a reply where the message comes from (John's comment wall) or to leave it on the wall of the person targeted? My main concern is about keeping Ariane's thread as short as possible ;-)
Do you know any relevant instructions about using ning?
Otherwise, this ning system gives a userfriendly feeling from the start, I begin to appreciate its potentialities but I sometimes feel a bit lost. Amongst my secret questions you could find: How to modify a comment? How to delete one, to move one, to preview one? But maybe some of these features are intented for the administrator (and-or moderators) only...
Anyway I'm going to decide in a near future what friends,students and contacts I will propose this ning social net.

Let me introduce myself in a few classical words, 44 years old, french mother tongue and living with a british woman since 1991. (2 children 12 and 5) Studied fine art in the North of France for 5, 6, 7, or I could say 8 years after the French "Bac". (I love to learn – in my fields) and I forgot: before going to a school of art, I have first heard about GS from my art teacher who encouraged me to read "The world of Null-A" & "The pawns of Null-A" (nearly 30 years ago). I also read things like "Zen's mind beginner's mind" of Shunryu SUZUKI. Then in 1986 and 87 I took part in 2 little seminars in East France, specifically on GS. The first one with Patrick HUG and another one with Henri LANDIER. The experience was a shock for me in both cases despite it was very short in time.
I still don't manage to read "Selections from S&S" but here and there, on paper or on the net, I find relevant writings. Like with this European Society of General Semantics or the site "La sémantique générale pour tous" de Isabelle AUBERT BAUDRON
I participated a bit (from mid 2006 onwards) on the yahoo group of the "Société Française de Sémantique Générale" (sfsg) and recently on another yahoo group about zetetics... I was glad to see that the website of the Institute of GS evolved and looks now more "seducing" than ever.
When I discovered your This is not That site I thought to myself: at last, somebody who cares for color! ... (I caricature again, sorry) I do consider clever things can be communicated with things like pictures or videos or games and be part of the "awakening experience". To what extent a "clever" thing should be published or communicated with the presentation of the "Selections from Science and Sanity" nowadays? In that sense I appreciated a lot the visual effort of "Communication, the transfer of meaning by Don FABUN because the ideas seemed far more accessible to me. And another idea of mine is the earlier the better: I cannot imagine people after let's say 35, changing old cultural habits much more than children or teenagers or young adults. Please tell me your opinion about the idea of communicating towards young persons, and how. I suppose you understood more than others that in order to teach (and to reach) efficiently, a dynamic powerpoint presentation is not to be excluded.
I don't have much experience of the ning possibilities, advantages and disadvantages. I have hardly no experience of the american culture but I need to communicate, to exchange and possibly to participate about ideas ad practice around and in the field of general semantics.
Another thing about "Spreading the word" to the world.
I am contacting you now as the administrator, I wonder if you consider it could be interesting if I invite my (close and far) friends and students here. In other words what degree do you have in mind in between the more the merrier and a serious working area for selected intellectually well brought up people.

Pollution can have many faces, I refer to the spam systems and hoaxes etc etc. I notice for instance we get Google ads on the right side of this site... What criteria do you use for accepting a new member?

I must admit though, I've not been a member of a "network" like this before and I'm unsure how to develop a page, and it may take a while at any rate right now: I'm teaching little kids English and we're winding down for the year and grades are due... as a teacher yourself you know how that is.
