Your end-of-school date is several weeks later than mine. That explains it. A few weeks ago I was in a similar position as you -- up to my ears in finals and grading of about 90 calculus students
I have vacation until the third week of August also. I have been working on the second volume of my trilogy: Miriam and Joshua, and have reached the approximate half-way point with 200 pages of text. I hope to have a rough manuscript by August, and will spend another year refining it with seven or eight complete revisions and re-writing before I'm happy with the manuscript.
If you want an e-mail copy of my first volume, and you can pick up lengthy attachments I'll send you the complete Volume 1 (Hannah and Miriam) as a WORD file. I'll need your e-mail address.
Haven't heard from you for a while. Completely submerged in a study of some sort? I occasionally say goodbye to the exterior world for a while and nourish my inward parts by study and reflection. Helps me maintain a certain balance. Perhaps the same for you?
Ishmael, "he who listens to (obeys) G_d", vs Israel, "he who wrestles with G-d". I like the second approach a lot better -- that G_d wrestles with his children as a parent might with a beloved child. I remember reading of the Angel wrestling with Yaacov.
Ishmael was something of a spoiled brat, since he was the heir- apparent for many years until Sarah finally produced Yitzkhak.
Ishmael used to give Avram headaches firing arrows at passers-by just for the sport of it. Hagar didn't discipline Ishmael, since she acted as the "unofficial matriarch" for many years and earned Sarah's enmity. Hagar finally got her comeuppance when Sarah gave birth to the "true heir".
G_d played fair with Hagar, for all her service to Him and to Avram. He saved her life and that of her son, in the desert, and gave her seed a portion, for Avram's sake. So we are inextricably half-uncle to half-nephew, Ishmael and Israel. Ishmael still acts like a spoiled brat. Not so? Still firing arrows at passersby in Lebanon, and at his half-nephew, Israel.
I have found very little overt anti-semitism here in the USA -- perhaps because I have not looked hard for it. The few times I encountered it in my student days at college I faced it squarely and let the ant-semites know what I thought of them in no uncertain terms. When I was faced with members of the Ku Klux Klan I let them know that if they showed up on my property, their bed-sheets might get bullet-holes in them. I showed them my service medals for wartime action in Korea, to convince them I could shoot straight. I have never had any trouble with them.
Thanks for the Biblical clarification. Yes, I was a young student at the University of Chicago in 1945 and was looking for a side job for pocket money. I was hired by the Institute of General Semantics to be an errand boy -- take mail to and from the post office, wrap books for mailing, update mailing lists, wash floors and walls, run the mimeograph machine, etc.
I ran the recording machinery during Alfred Korzybski's seminars and was so impressed with his 'weltanshaung' that I asked to buy a copy of Science and Sanity. I was stunned when I read it and set aside my university studies (Liberal Arts), for a month or so, while I read the book through, carefully, three times with notes.
After I graduated in 1948, (with a minor in mathematics) I found IGS had moved to Lime Rock Connecticut. I went there and studied, as a student assistant to Korzybski for the last three years of his life (1948, 1949, 1950). I remained in touch with IGS for several more years, but got my PhD in math and became involved in my career in industrial applied mathematics and university teaching and research.
I returned to GS after I semi-retired and have been associated with the third (current) generation of Korzybski students since 2005. Currently I am starting to contribute to the ongoing GS studies, first with a biographical review of my years with Korzybski, and various articles about General Semantics, including a "General Semantics View of the Calculus". I have Chapter I of the Calculus published here in the Forum, and an autobiographical article about my years with Korzybski. (A Lad in Lime Rock).
I have become increasingly "Jewish" over the years as I gain experience about what other sects have to offer.
Welcome to our group. I love "conversing" with you.
Menashe and Ephraim I know were Joseph's sons. In counting Joseph's sons they took both of these in the count of the twelve tribes. Joseph is not counted, and Levi is not counted since they have no tribal lands as a heritage, apparently. Not so?
Anti-Semitism seems to be on the rise again -- associated with Muslim nations this time? I remember the Grand Mufti in the 1930's and 40's praised Adolf Hitler and supported his Anti-Semitism.
Go forth and conquer, Yocheved -- you are very much needed now.
Yocheved, hello. Welcome to ThisIsNotThat, I'm pleased you found and joined this network. Please feel free to develop your page and expand the network as best works for you.
I've been to Israel once in 2000, spending a week in Tel Aviv and a day-trip to Jerusalem.
May I ask how you learned of general semantics? Speaking of Elie Weisel, one of my former colleagues gave a presentation at a GS conference in 2006 in which she spoke of how inspired she was by watching him interviewed by Oprah Winfrey. Her presentation is available online here:
Also, I'm just completing a major revision to my website after having added a lot of teaching/learning materials. You might find some interesting reading materials, exercises, demonstrations, and presentations related to GS and productive language-behaviors there: .
Your name sounds so familiar -- where have I read that before? (Moses' mother, certainly, but what else?). I am writing a historic novel about the Second Jewish Commonwealth -- actually a trilogy. I have put volume I on line at Amazon.com under the book name: Hannah and Miriam These are two heroines who prevented Herod Magnus from slaughtering thousands of innocent men of Judaea (year: 3756 ).
Go to Amazon.com books and enter the title: Hannah and Miriam My book, Vol 1 should be first on the list of that genre. Click on the picture, When it enlarges you may scroll down and may see comments from various readers. You can also Search through the Inside.
If you are interested I can e-mail you an attached WORD file if you have a web address. It's over 350 pages so will take some time to upload to you. I would love to have your comments.

I have left a Forum question about Cognitive Education and Communication for K-12. Your comments would be most valuable.

The name change is a bit complicated. I attach a long explanation as a WORD file. Enjoy!
