David,
Sorry about the time that slipped by since your letter and my initial wish to respond. We went to Alaska to visit our son and his greater family, then I came back with a two-doctor "plane disease" that has kept me down. Finally, tonight, when I tried to answer you, I was informed I couldn't answer directly but had to go thru thisisnot that, which I had forgotted the password for, etc. But here I am. Please send me your ordinary e-mail address, just in case. Also, if I check "send a Message," will it be seen by everyone on my small friends list, or only by you?

As to the cat, "Daffodil" -- it may very well be. I know my wife, Marjorie (Washburn) Levine was petting Daffodil in 8/53 -- our first visit back to Kendig after I returned from Korean War Service.
Looks like the man with cat (not a cat in a hat!)
David, a question about Korzybski's presentations at the seminars where you worked with him.
I know that he had his assistant taking notes so he (the assistant) could give AK a 'flap' if he got 'lost' in his presentation after an extended 'footnote'.
Did Korzybski also have debriefing after a lecture where the assistant or others would comment on what he covered and how it went? I seem to recall reading or hearing this somewhere but can't recall where now. Or perhaps I'm hallucinating it. 8-)
Anyhow, what were your duties and what did you do at the seminars where you assisted Korzybski. Did you do anything that resembled such a debriefing on his lectures?
An historical note. Ms. Maxine Mallach who just last year received the J. Talbott Winchell Award for her lifetime contributions in support of the Institute of General Semantics, has passed away at her home in Lime Rock, Connecticut. Her house is in easy walking distance to the Institute of General Semantics when the Institute was located in Lime Rock in the old Leonard Richardson mansion.
Maxine served faithfully from 1946 to 1973, first hired as a typist and assistant editor to the Director, Ms M. Kendig. In later years, after Charlotte Read had moved to the Columbia University area with her husband Alan Walker Read, and M. Kendig was feeling the onset of ill health and advancing old age, Maxine took on the role of Acting Director, with the aid of a few associates. She kept the General Semantics Bulletin and the Newsletter in publication, and served the Membership.
Maxine relates how Alfred Korzybski used to come visit with her father, Joseph Mallach, who was an aeronautical engineer and mathematician, and hold long conversations with him. "Mac" developed a great affection and admiration for Korzybski and was devoted to the promotion of the goals of the Institute, especially the GS education of k-12 aged children.
She died in her sleep, July 29, 2008, at the age of 86, after a short illness. A dozen people were present at the funeral celebration, including IGS member Bob Potter, who also received the J. Talbot Winchell Award, and a surviving nephew of Maxine, and household caretakers, were present at the funeral, held in Canaan, CT. Although Maxine was not religious -- in the absence of a Catholic priest, services were performed by a local "Eucharistic" Minister. Bob Potter relates that the weather was "absolutely perfect." He apologized for the GS-forbidden words -- but insisted the description was less than adequate.
Bob invites anyone interested in visiting Maxine's gravesite (as well as that of Korzybski, Kendig, and Gates) to contact him. He lives nearby in West Cornwall, CT, telephone
860-672-6191 or write to address: 337 Town Street, West Cornwall, CT 06796.
Sincerely,
David Linwood

PS. A thank you to Janet Manko, Editor of the Lakeville Journal, and close neighbor of Maxine, for her obituary and help with the final arrangements.
Also a big thank you to Bob Potter for his help. DL
I am not familiar with the name Pula...
I read Science and Sanity, Language in Thought and Action, and People in Quandaries...about 25 years ago. Currently, I have a little group of folks (9) that meets twice a month and we are reading Selections from Science and Sanity and Bruce's book, Drive Yourself Sane. It's been delightful to revisit GS with my little group and to realise how much 'stuck' with me from my earlier 'visit' to the GS alternate reality.
thank you for befriending me...the Kathleen of 7-7-08
Thanks for the welcome. I originally joined ISGS in the '60s and became active in IGS in 2003, presenting a paper at the Las Vegas conference and another paper in 2006 at Arlington TX.
Hi David... It is the end of the school year. For reasons unbeknownst to me I am the most popular kid in my school and the most popular teacher -- these two statuses carry certain responsibilities to attend a host of year-end afternoon and evening events: piano recitals, violin recitals, music concerts, graduation, award ceremonies for several of my students who I entered into a writing contest and won, and other performances and G-d forbid I should miss that last day of school, which is tomorrow. My life hasn't been my own for the last two weeks. After I show up for last day, and attend the last recital, my life will revert back to my control again, at least until the 2nd last week in August.
Thanks for your inquiry, it's nice to know that somebody noticed my absence.
I tangled with the KKK also -- I lived in Port Arthur TX, 20 miles from Vidor Head Office. They left some very threatening messages on my phone machine -- the phone company changed my number and took my listing out of the book -- for free too -- at that time there was a fee to have an unlisted number.
Why "Linwood", if I can be personal. Levine is so much more obvious.
YOU'RE THE ONE WHO STUDIED WITH KORZYBSKI! I just now made the connection to your post on the S&S site.
Anyway, answer to your last note to me: Levi is not named in some tribal lists because they belonged exclusively to G-d (Num 3:11-13); there are several lists in the Tanakh; not only do Levi, Joseph, Ephraim, and Menashe swap in and out once in a while, but the orders are different (slightly) and as soon as I find my list of locations I'll better be able to address the issue. The Rabbis of course have explanations for this phenomenon.
One of the things I forgot about Yocheved is that she is listed in the 70 who descended into Egypt -- the only female in that list and legend has it that she lived long enough to leave in the Exodus and crossed the Jordan into Canaan.
Antisemitism never leaves. I agree with Daniel Goldhagen's thesis of latency and I hold that its evolutionary nature allows it to adapt to current situation and is limited only by the ideology and technology of the time and doesn't even require Jewish presence to exist. It is a most interesting phenomenon.
Not only did the grand mufti praise Hitler, he sat out the War in Germany with Hitler. Not a nice guy. He was the one who told the Palestinians to flee because Israel was soon to be eliminated and they could return. So here we are 60 years later in the fallout from the Grand Mufti-Hitler Alliance. Another factor people forget is that it is family feud -- the Arabs are the sons of Ishmael -- the key term in the "Israel-Arab conflict" is "cousins".
Back to work,
talk with you later
Shalom from Jerusalem

Hello David,
Sorry, I don't know where to reply to your comment about Wim Mertens. I think this Flemish musician born 1956 in Belgium (thanks Wikipedia) might be able to speak and sing german as well. He is often considered as a creator for the music of films (some of it is played in "The belly of an architect" of Peter Greenaway). From what I can gather the title could mean "a zero as round as a ball".
Don't ask me what he meant exactly. It vaguely sounds like the beginning of a Haïku to my ears.
If here is not a right place for posting, tell me.
It's already 10:30 pm here, I enjoyed communicating "through" the Atlantic ocean but I 'd better leave for today.
Bye for now.
Yes, Sunnyvale is very close to Dallas. I'm about 1 hour from the GS institute in Ft. Worth.
Yes, I do know Mr. Stockdale. It's time to have lunch with him and catch up.

Ok, we have the famous Daffodil. Charlotte is on the periphery just out of camera range
